After you know the main engine components and engine working principle, we will discuss the secondary systems that are essential for engine operation which are:
1-lubrication system
2-cooling system (water cooling and air cooling)
3-fuel supply to engine
Each system will be discused in details
1-lubrication system:
Lubrication serves the following purpuses:
- Reduction of the resistance to relative motion between the surfaces.
- Prevention of seizure.
- Reduction of the rate of wear of the sliding surfaces.
- To carry away the heat generated by the friction.
lubrication system history:
Early engines had only elementary lubrication systems. Up to the 1920s,
some had manual pumps that were actuated intermittently. For others, up to
the 1930s, oil was fed by gravity from a tank through a pipe to the crankcase,
where it was either piped directly, or passed through ducts in the casting, to
the main bearings, the flow generally being manually regulated by a needle
valve. Alternatively, it was delivered into the base of the casting, whence it
was whipped up by the rotating cranks into a fine mist to lubricate all the
other moving parts.
